Originating from the Sanhaja group of Berbers, The Almoravids, a religious order distinguished by their iconic face veil, they swept over all the Berber tribes in West Africa and created the largest empire in Africa, stretching from the Senegal River to eventually reach the mountains of Spain. This first episode will cover their rise, with Yahya ibn Ibrahim traveling across the Islamic world, trying to find support to reform the Berbers in West Africa. Eventually, he met with Abdallah ibn Yasin, who would become the spiritual leader of the Almoravids, expanding Almoravid territory up to the wars with the Kingdom of Barghawata, which had its own religion amidst all its Muslim neighbors. Yusuf ibn Tashfin would later take control of the Empire and create his reputation as one of the greatest rulers the Islamic world had witnessed.
