Birmingham New Street is the heart of the rail network connecting London to Crewe and Glasgow, and Aberdeen to Penzance. Nearly one and a half million passengers use the station every week, and a train departs from the station every 37 seconds making it the busiest interchange station in the country.

With unprecedented access to Network Rail’s command centres and stations, we will capture the feat of running this major transport hub from all angles. From managers making critical decisions on whether to run or stop trains, to the orange army: the people who are trackside in all weathers making sure that the 20,000 miles of track are safe and serviceable. These dedicated men and women in high-viz deal with everything from maintenance to engineering emergencies and trespassers.

We will meet the hard-working customer service assistants who are on the front-line dealing with angry or drunk passengers, and who go the extra mile to get them to their destinations. We will join the shift of cheeky train manager Adam who loves a good prank but is less that pleased when he discovers a passenger without a ticket. We will also glimpse into the cabin of train drivers and see what it’s like to experience a near-miss at 80mph.

We meet the team at Birmingham New Street where a train departs every 37 seconds; it’s the busiest interchange station in the country. With unprecedented flooding, Network Rail is wading through a crisis the likes of which it’s not faced in decades. Engineers battle the elements, a military operation kicks into gear at Network Rail HQ and beleaguered station staff deal with stranded passengers filling up the concourse demanding answers. In another part of Birmingham, Banksy comes to town and presents engineers with a uniquely challenging gift, and we get a take a journey with cheeky Train Manager Adam who has a very distinctive style of customer service.

At a time when customer satisfaction is at its lowest in 10 years, we follow the efforts of staff as they use their ingenuity and years of experience to solve dramatic everyday incidents to prevent them turning into costly consequences. When a train runs a red signal at Birmingham New Street, engineers work through the night to move the stranded train, investigate the cause and get the station back into operation before the morning commuter rush. The intertwining fortunes of two of the nation’s biggest station come to the fore as Euston station is evacuated on a busy Friday night leaving passengers in London and Birmingham stranded, confused and angry. And dispatcher David needs to impart his wisdom to a new recruit on his busy shift.

A strike threatens to bring Birmingham New Street station to a standstill and on the outskirts of London, mobile teams discover a home illegally erected next to one of the busiest areas of track in the country. In this episode the network faces a huge challenge with industrial action happening on one of Birmingham city’s busiest days of the year. As passengers are left high and dry, it’s down to Network Rail to deliver the bad news. We meet the dedicated trainspotters who come out in force to say goodbye to Virgin Trains. And at Euston, there’s no rest for Transport Police officers as they’re called on to back up rail staff when tempers flare.
