Filming of Takin' it to the Streets, a Second Line event in New Orleans.

The Second Line is a traditional event which derives from West African cultures which is very much apart of New Orleans culture. I was lucky enough to catch one!

It is amazing how the crowds form and then a parade starts, roads close as you walk and reopen with in minutes, as soon as it has come it leaves.

The energy was busy, people sold food on the streets as you walked and danced in pride. People turned up on horses huge bikes.

I was desperate to see a Second Line in NOLA - I had read about them for a while - sometimes they are for parties, sometimes they are for funerals. They used to be more often however the tradition is not as alive as it was.

One thing I would say about NOLA, I still managed to catch bands rehearsing on the street. I remember standing at night, watching a group of boys on a stoop with some brass. One had a knife and was just playing with it and place it in to wooden beams, not in a threatening way, just in the way someone would do in a forest. It was an unusual site for me in the UK but that feeling of nature and city, the big land that is the USA, all of that positive and negative history, it all came together a little bit as they played gorgeous brass.
