Dr Peter O'Kane, consultant cardiologist at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Dorset outlines the work of the Cardiac Intervention Unit following the quick transfer of a patient suffering a heart attack (Myocardial infarction) by ambulance crews to the Catheter Labs, where they immediately receive primary angioplasty treatment. Dr O'Kane also explains the reasons for the hospital adopting a 24/7 primary angioplasty treatment model from October 2012. The production demonstrates the successful implementation of this treatment pathway and outlines the techniques used in a primary angioplasty procedure. This is an amazing insight into the NHS and the fantastic care that can now be received in world-class facilities.
