Prostate enlargement, a common issue among ageing men, causes bothersome urinary symptoms such as weak flow, urgency, and frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom. Dr Dheeraj Kumar Tiwari, HOD & Senior Consultant, Interventional Radiology at Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, discusses this prevalent condition and modern treatment methods.

Traditionally, surgery was the primary option for managing prostate enlargement, which could lead to complications like erectile dysfunction, incontinence, and urine dribbling post-operation. However, Dr Tiwari highlights a less invasive technique called prostatic artery embolization. This procedure involves a minor incision, either in the wrist or groin, through which a catheter is inserted into the prostatic blood supply. Special particles, known as PVA particles, are then injected to block blood flow, causing the prostate to shrink, which relieves the pressure on the urethra and improves urinary flow.

One of the significant benefits of prostatic artery embolization is the minimal risk of erectile dysfunction post-treatment. This method is particularly effective for treating large prostates, over 100 grams. Dr Tiwari recommends that men experiencing symptoms like urgency, frequency, or frequent nighttime urination consult with an interventional radiologist to see if their prostate is enlarged and discuss potential treatment options, including embolization. This approach offers fewer complications and a quicker recovery than traditional surgery.
