At the 4th Palm Springs, Clark Gable had agreed to be the honorary starter. Bandleader Don Ricardo, who worked the Great White Steamer to Catalina Island, entered two Jowett Jupiters. And Keenan Wynn, who sometimes piloted his own cars, entered a Mercury-powered Alfa for Tom Bamford. Jack McAfee was the iron man of the weekend. He was at the wheel of John Edgar's MG Special, but also he took Edgar's Jaguar to first place in the big production race and a new Siata Sports to win the small production go. The main event was for all modified cars. Pundits expected Phil Hill to win in George Cameron's Cunningham, but a U-joint snapped at the first comer. Chuck brought his Manning Special- a "home-made" car according to Road & Track- home first followed by architect Don Parkinson in his Jaguar Special and Mike Graham in a Cad-Allard. The under-1500cc cars were led by Al Coppel (MG), Bill Pringle (Simca) and Bill Pollack (1400cc Siata).
