At the University of Iowa, creativity is at the heart of everything we do.

In this community, we blend artistry and technology to offer a tremendous variety of ways to enjoy the performing arts—whether you are a creator, performer, or audience member.

A dedication to creation, collaboration, and exploration lives at the heart of our academic performing arts activities at the University of Iowa. The School of Music, Department of Theatre Arts, and Department of Dance have drawn talented students and exceptional faculty to Iowa City for decades, and their performances and productions consistently impress and inspire audiences. We were the first university in the U.S. to grant a Master of Fine Arts degree (in 1922), accepting creative work in lieu of a written thesis—and that tradition continues.

Our experienced professionals in the university’s Performing Arts Production Unit not only make campus performances spectacular, but also provide deep learning experiences backstage for university students who can gain all kinds of skills in our diverse, high-tech production environments. 

Hancher Auditorium elevates the university’s robust performing arts culture by welcoming top-tier artists from around the country and the world to perform for and create with those on campus—as well as K-12 students and people of all ages in the wider community. 

Together, these five units make up Performing Arts at Iowa—a collaborative endeavor dedicated to student success and innovation in the arts.
