This is the kind of project car we like: when you hit the end; when you can modify no more and you have built the most obscene possible version of something, that somehow still works. Gildred Racing in Buellton, CA, calls this the Super Cooper S, which, frankly, really undersells it. This 1970's Mini Cooper, with a stock wheelbase, has a Rotrex-supercharged, fully built 3.5L Acura V6 *mounted in the rear*. The cooling system, air conditioner, fuel cell, and some electronics are in the front, where a tiny four-cylinder once was. It makes 480 wheel horsepower on 91 octane through a six-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. On 100 octane it makes 550 horsepower at the wheels and runs a "low-ten" quarter mile at 140 mph. If the Super Cooper S looks familiar, that's because it was featured on the Netflix series "Fastest Car," where it beat our friend Amber Blonigan's McLaren 675LT in a quarter- mile drag race.

Even with this astounding performance, the Super Cooper S gives up nothing in comfort: it has a suede interior, comfy heated and cooled Recaro seats, automatic climate control, keyless start, and a bluetooth stereo. It only weighs 2,000 lbs.
