The BMW X1 has grown up for its third generation, shedding its quirky, oddball looks for a more mature crossover style. It's now a legitimate small premium SUV contender taking on rivals like the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3, and Volvo XC40.
Driving It: Reinventing The Base Crossover
Under the hood, the X1 runs the gamut from gas and diesel engines to plug-in hybrids and a full EV iX1 model. The gasoline lineup starts with a 168-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-four in the sDrive20i, with all-wheel-drive xDrive23i getting a 205-hp version. The sDrive18d has a 148-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel, and the xDrive23d ups output to 208 hp.
Stepping up are two plug-in hybrid variants - the xDrive25e and xDrive30e - with a 64-mile electric range and 322 combined hp in the gutsier 30e. But the star is undoubtedly the iX1 xDrive30, BMW's fully electric compact crossover with dual motors making 309 hp. It'll hit 62 mph in 5.6 seconds and has an estimated 270-mile range.
On the road, the iX1 feels lively and planted, typical of BMW's sporty driving dynamics even in an EV package. The gas and diesel models feel solid if uninspired, with occasionally clunky transmission behavior. Overall, the electric iX1 is the most compelling driver's choice.
Premium Cabin With Some Quirks
Inside, the X1 has a premium cabin with good passenger room and a competitive 540-liter cargo area (490 liters in the iX1). The design is clean and upscale, but BMW's new curved display lacks the previous physical climate controls, making simple adjustments tedious. The lack of the classic rotary iDrive controller is also disappointing.
Pricing starts from $34,340 for the sDrive20i, while the range-topping iX1 Electric opens at $53,295. Higher xLine and M Sport trims bring bigger wheels, styling tweaks, and extra luxuries. Overall, the new BMW X1 presents a solid, well-rounded premium compact crossover choice...as long as you go electric with the iX1 model.
