This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander 3-row SUV versus the 2022 VW Tigaun 3-row compact utility.
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a 7-passenger vehicle, the Tiguan has the option of both 5 or 7-passengers which is quite unique for the compact crossover category. The 3rd row in Canada is $800 CAD on all trims. In the US, it is standard on FWD models, there is no 3rd row option on AWD trims.

The Tiguan and Outlander are about the same length, but the Outlander offers an extra 1.5” of front legroom and over an inch more second row space. Comparing the 7-seater Tiguan with the Outlander, they are very close in cargo space behind the second and 3rd rows, but the Outlander wins in overall cargo capacity.

The Outlander has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT with super all wheel control. It has 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. The Outlander also offers a PHEV, the 2022 model has a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with 39 km of EV range. The 2023 Outlander PHEV will be arriving later this year with an EV range of 87 km on the WLTC testing cycle, the EPA range has not been released but typically the EPA range is lower.

The Tiguan has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada but in the US there are both FWD and AWD options.

The Outlander gets better fuel economy at 9.7L/100 km, 24 MPG city
and 7.9L/100 km/30 MPG highway. The VW 10.6L, 22 MPG city and 8.0L, 29 MPG highway.

The Outlander can tow 2,000 pounds, the Tiguan 1,500 and the Outlander offers more ground clearance, 8.3”, the Tiguan 7.6”.

The Outlander is a 7-passenger vehicle and offers a beautiful interior winning Wards ten best interiors award. Compared to the previous model, the cabin is quieter, Mitsubishi added double pain acoustic front door glass to eliminate vibration and noise. The thicker steering wheel has a more natural feel to it, engineer’s added dampers to reduce steering vibration. The Outlander comes standard with heated front seats, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 7” information display, an 8” touchscreen, push button start, remote key-less entry, cloth upholstery and manual driver and passenger seats. In the US, the heated front seats are standard one up from the base model.

All trims, but the base model on the Outlander get a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power lift-gate, wireless charger and a panoramic sunroof. A 9” touchscreen with wired Android Auto and wireless Apple Carplay are standard two up from the base model. In the US, there are a few differences, the larger touchscreen is standard one up from the base model, the panoramic sunroof is available in a package on that trim and the heated steering wheel is in a package on the SEL trim.
The top two trims is where you’ll find those extra features like a 12.3” digital driver display, heated rear seats, quilted leather appointed seats a 10 way power driver’s seat and a power passenger seat. The top trim has a head up display and the Bose sound system. In the US, you can add packages on the lower trims to get some of these features.

The Tiguan interior got a refresh with upgraded materials, new interior colour options with available two-tone leather and a third row for $800 CAD. In the US, the 3rd row is standard on FWD models, it is not available on AWD trims. This Volkswagen comes standard with a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, a Volkswagen digital cockpit with an 8-inch instrument cluster, a 6.5” touchscreen and Apple Carplay and Android Auto, key-less access and push button start.

One up from the base model, the Comfortline trim in Canada and the SE in the US have the larger 8” touchscreen, a 10.25” instrument cluster, a wireless charger, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, 8-way power driver’s seat and leatherette seating surfaces.

The Comfort R-Line Black Edition comes standard with front and rear parking sensors and 30 colour ambient lighting. The top Highline R-Line model and SEL R-Line in the US have all the extra features like an 8-speaker Fender audio system, driver seat memory, heated rear seats, leather seating surfaces, a power passenger seat and ventilated front seats. The power tailgate is standard one up from the base model in Canada and you can add the panoramic sunroof on this trim for $1,500 CAD/$1,200 US. In the US, the power tailgate is available two up from base model on the SE R-Line Black trim.
