Both the Bible and the Quran recount the journey to the Children of Israel to the land of Israel, with Joseph's enslavement in Egypt, his rise to power, and the subsequent enslavement of his family under a later king, culminating in Moses and Aaron leading the Israelites in a miraculous exodus to the promised land. While this narrative is cherished by believers, Dr. Shabir Ally says modern historians question its accuracy. In particular, they criticise the exaggerated number of people involved in the exodus as depicted in the Bible. While faith may reconcile such doubts for believers, for Muslims, the story holds less significance than it does for those who adopt literal translations of the Bible, as the Quran does not mention the number of people involved. The literal interpretation of this story as the foundation of Israel's claim to Palestine is a major reason why some people support the war on Gaza, suggesting that a shift away from literal readings could diminish conflict in the Middle East over the disputed land.
