This is an interlock mechanism I built to add transfer switch functionality to my home circuit breaker box. This ensures that either the utility line is supplying power to our house, or the generator is, but not both. This is easier than installing a multi-circuit transfer switch, and safer than a male-male (suicide) extension cord. I'm using a UL489 (UL listing for use as a disconnect switch), 30A circuit breaker. All together, this project cost me about $100 (breaker, outlet, outlet cover, 8 awg wire, split nut wire splices) The circuit breakers in the electrical box shown in this video supplies power to the sub panel for my house.
