The Green New Deal, proposed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has sparked a national debate on how to combat climate change. But is it a new idea, and can it work? Nora looks at the big picture.
The goal of the Green New Deal is to combat climate change and poverty at the same time through a program of massive public investment in renewable energy sources. It would create jobs while also focusing on the impact of climate change on people’s lives. The idea is that you can’t just focus on climate change, but have to do it within a larger social context. This would be the biggest role for the federal government since the original New Deal in the wake of the Great Depression. But, what and how and how much will it cost questions are still unanswered.
