Today North Carolina became the 4th state to publish guidance on AI adoption in schools. In this video, we spoke with Vera Cubero who works for the state’s Dept. of Public Instruction and spearheaded its development. We talked about how this guidance came to be, key areas of focus, and how they plan to share and socialize it.

The TL:DW (too long didn’t watch) highlights:

-The guidance is structured around North Carolina's Digital Learning Plan, organized around 5 key areas.

-Has practical resources and recommendations for implementation, including AI for Education’s K12 Roadmap, GenAI Academic Policy Guidelines, Prompt Library, and other resources.

-Emphasis on including vetted, trusted, and K12-focused resources for school leaders, training staff, and introducing AI literacy to students to cut through the noise of lesser quality material available online.

-Provides recommendations on citing sources and AI detectors

-The committee also included data privacy directors and cybersecurity experts to ensure those components were addressed.

-Guidance will be disseminated through multiple channels, including leadership meetings, webinars, and regional consultants.

-The document is intended to be a living document, updated regularly.

We applaud North Carolina and Vera for leading this collaborative effort, their practical approach, and the focus on empowering educators with AI knowledge and resources.
