There are many reasons to love the new Toyota Tacoma, such as the more capable Tacoma TRD Off-road trim and the far more refined and livable TRD Sport trim. The Toyota Tacoma's new turbo powertrains are also a HUGE step up from the old engines, along with perhaps the greatest leap forward--the new automatic transmission. (The return of the manual transmission in the Toyota Tacoma certainly doesn't hurt, either.) But when Toyota showed off the new Toyota Tacoma XRunner at SEMA late last year, it got everyone thinking about what MORE the Toyota Tacoma could be. We already knew that there would be a new Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, and of course we were already excited about the new Tacoma Trailhunter trim. But the Toyota Tacoma XRunner with its borrowed from the Toyota Tundra engine along with a host of other performance upgrades might herald the return of the sport truck. Not the sport truck like the Tacoma TRD Sport, which is just a more attractive version of the 2wd Toyota Tacoma; no, the Tacoma XRunner is something else entirely. It's a hot rod truck. Those used to be a thing, you know? Could we see Toyota use off the shelf parts to put together an XRunner package for the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma? Only time will tell, and Toyota Tacomas don't get redesigned every day so we've got some time. With prices creeping higher and higher for what used to be mainstream trims (we're looking at you Tacoma TRD Off-road) and the TRD Pro and Trailhunder likely commanding priced north of $60k, it's not like the idea of a super Toyota Tacoma on the sporty end of the spectrum would be out of place in both the lineup and the pricing structure. Which would you be more interested in? The good old Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro or something completely different like this Toyota Tacoma XRunner? Let us know in the comments!
