The star of Parks and Rec, Ingrid Goes West and her new film, Emily the Criminal, talks about her career at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival, presented in partnership with American Express (5-16 October).

From Ingrid Goes West to Emily the Criminal, Aubrey Plaza has consistently dazzled in lead roles of increasing complexity.

Across a seven-year stint playing April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation, Plaza gained acclaim for her perfect deadpan wit and displayed impressive skill in bringing an edgy disaffection while creating intriguing, empathetic characters. But if early work found her characterised as the queen of sarcasm, lead film roles over the last few years have demonstrated her astonishing complexity as an actor: titular sociopathic social media stalker in Ingrid Goes West (2017), indie filmmaker/actress Allison pushed to the brink in Black Bear (2020), and now as a struggling gig-worker who discovers an inner steely agency and power in Emily the Criminal (LFF 2022); all films that she also produced.

With plans to move into directing, it's thrillingly clear there we’ve only just begun to see what Aubrey Plaza has to offer, both in front of the camera and behind it.
