FLYKIT Review BLUF
- Flykit is paying me to take the time to review this product
- This is a preproduction model and may differ from their final production version
- This is essentially a common toy micro drone, with a unique special feature:
- A lighted ring spins around the drone as it flies to create a sphere of light effect, which is actually super cool and has a lot of “wow” factor. I haven’t seen any other drones with this gimmick.
- There are different light modes to create different patterns, such as solid or chasing effect
- It seems to be very durable, having survived many good crashes with only a propeller coming off once. However, oftentimes the battery door will pop open on impact.
- Flight time: about 4 minutes with the light ring rotating (which seems very reasonable)
- It is very easy to fly, with the altitude hold working well most of the time and 3 “speed” (or “sensitivity”) settings. Personally I don’t care for the “headless” or “one-key return” modes as I have never found them to be very useful or effective on any drone, this one included. Note that the flight controls feel a bit different while the ring is spinning (due to the laws of physics), and it will try to fly forward on its own, which requires a little “backward” trim.
- In the box it comes with the drone, controller (3xAAA batteries not included), two flight batteries, USB charger, spare set of propellers, and the manual.
- Pricing: MSRP $99. Currently, you can “back” it on IndieGoGo (essentially, placing a preproduction order) for as low as $49 per unit.
