Lately, General Motors is selling between six and eight million vehicles globally. Whether we’re talking small cars, big trucks, or the increasing number of all-electric vehicles coming to market in the near future, every one of those vehicles needs to be able to meet certain customer expectations, across a wide range of conditions.

Enter the engineers.

First, they design the vehicles and all of the thousands of parts and systems inside, from turbochargers to batteries to infotainment systems. Then, they set off testing and torturing their creations, looking for areas where improvements can be made.

But this isn’t a story about testing. Instead, it’s a story about two of the youngest engineers I’ve ever met, and the academic path they took through high school and onwards to a one-of-a-kind job that involves extreme-weather testing of prototype vehicles and systems that the general public won’t learn about for years.
