Volvo and Estate cars go together like Ikea and flat pack furniture, and the new V90 model is probably one of the best cars Volvo have produced in a number of years. The V90 is based on the Swedish car manufacturers large executive saloon, the S90, and while it's actually a slightly shorter than the saloon, it still has a massive boot as well as five seats. Engine choices are a couple of 2.0-litre diesels, a 2.0-litre petrol variant or a powerful a hybrid with over 400BHP.
The V90's executive car roots mean it’s priced well against premium models like the Audi A6 Avant , the BMW 5 Series Touring and the Mercedes E-Class Estate. Buyers in this bracket aren’t just looking for space, they also want a comfortable ride, a sharp drive, strong engines and generous levels of luxury and equipment.
Volvo has used its appropriately named Power Pulse technology on the V90's D5 engine. This uses compressed air to help the turbocharger kick in faster, and the result is superb acceleration from low revs helped by standard all wheel drive.
Ride comfort is crucial in family estates, and this is another area in which the V90 really does impress, especially if you ticked the box for the optional adaptive dampers that includes air suspension at the rear, as this helps the V90 glide along motorways and over rougher roads at town speeds in a composed fashion.
Volvo is synonymous with safety and it has taken this to a new level with the V90, upgrading its standard emergency city braking system to recognise large animals, as well as pedestrians, cyclists and, of course, cars. Standard, too, is a system aptly named Autopilot, that will automatically keep you in your lane on the motorway, control your distance from the cars ahead and maintain your speed fully autonomously. Euro NCAP hasn’t tested the V90, but the S90 saloon is one of the safest cars in its class, performing especially well in the safety assist category, unsurprisingly.
