On Thursday, March 21, the Battleship New Jersey will embark on a historic journey, marking its first dry dock maintenance in over 30 years. Guided by tug boats from McAllister Towing, the majestic vessel will set sail, turning south under the Walt Whitman Bridge toward the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard at Dry Dock #3.

This significant location holds special significance, as it was where the USS New Jersey was originally constructed during the late 1930s and launched on December 7, 1942.

The upcoming dry dock maintenance is paramount for ensuring the continued operation and preservation of the Battleship. This comprehensive project will entail the removal of marine growth from the hull, repainting, inspection of sensitive areas, and the replacement of anodes for cathodic protection.

To offer the public insight into this vital maintenance process, tours of the dry dock will be available on Saturdays and Sundays. These tours will provide a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse into the meticulous care required to maintain this iconic vessel.
