the fear of transformation | Tokyo Ghoul

What do you do when you have to become something new?

Tokyo Ghoul, at least when you don’t count Root A and :re, is a popular, if somewhat debated anime. It follows Ken Kaneki, an average person who becomes a ghoul, a creature just like humans but who can only survive from eating their flesh, after a date gone wrong with Rize Kamishiro. Although the eventual care of Touka and Anteiku help Ken, Kaneki’s time as a human transforming into a ghoul is a fear-wrought one, as he’s forced to explain and analyze his changed life in a new light. Are he and Touka monsters like the CCG’s Amon and his society says, or is it just mentality and establishment worsening his transitional life? Is Ken simply scared of change, unable to handle it by a lack of knowledge? While the anime may be melodramatic and “teenage edgy” at times, it still paints a great picture, one well worth a video essay, of the almost body horror nature of transformation, and a discussion and analysis of how the social mindset surrounding it can be the real monster.
