Lenovo: Zero to Top

Which brand do you think produces and sells the most computers in the world? I'm sure some brands come to life in your mind. Is it Apple? No. The Dell you see in almost every movie? No. Could it be HP or Asus? No. The answer is Lenovo. Yes. Of the 287 million computers sold last year, 24% were sold by Lenovo alone. In fact, some of you may be watching this video from a Lenovo brand device right now. This is the story of a brand that was founded in a dusty two-room building in Beijing and rose from zero to the top. It's the story of how it took years to produce a product, to a gigantic structure producing a device every 3 seconds. It is the story of a formation that started with a team of 10 people and is a source of bread for 71,000 people today.
When the calendars showed November 1984, 10 engineers led by Liu Chuanzhi decided to establish a company, unaware that they would one day become a world giant. And with just $25,000 in their pockets. This company, named New Technology Developer, would first turn into Legend Holding and then Lenovo and become a world brand.
In 1990, 6 years after its establishment, New Technology Developer produced its first computer with its growing team. The name of the company was changed to Legend and the computer was launched. Four years later, the company was celebrating its one millionth personal computer. 1 million computers in 4 years. Hard times, sacrifices and perseverance bore the first fruit. With the money from the stock market, Legend company opened offices in Europe, America and Australia and started to increase its production, including a new laptop model. In 1996, Legend surpassed its biggest rival IBM in its hometown of China and became number 1 and started to sell its own laptop. In 1998, Legend started to sell 43% of computers sold in China.
Founded under the name of New Technology Developer and transformed into Legend Holding, this company went through another change in its journey to the top when the dates showed in April 2003 and changed its name to Lenovo. lenovo Meaning, what was the source of this Lenovo? The name Lenovo was formed by combining Novo, which means "innovation" in Latin, and the current name Legend. The name also means "to be together, to think together" in Chinese and also represented the term creativity.
Lenovo, formerly known as Legend, began expanding the company at an extraordinary rate, with the money coming from its investments and sales. Lenovo turned to its competitors first. Lenovo bought the rights of this legendary Thinkpad series, which is used even in space, from IBM in 2005. IBM has transferred personal technology rights to Lenovo, including its line of laptops and tablets. Lenovo paid $1.2 billion for these rights and also took over $500 million in debt from what was once its biggest competitor, IBM. This acquisition move made Lenovo the 3rd largest computer manufacturer in the world by volume and accelerated the Lenovo brand's access to foreign markets.
By 2010, Lenovo had sold its 60 millionth Thinkpad and launched its first smartphone, Lephone. Lenovo had made one of its largest investments and spent US$793 million to build a mobile phone manufacturing and R&D facility in Wuhan, Hubei. This investment bore fruit and Lenovo became the largest smartphone seller in China with a population of 1.5 billion, where smartphones of 100 different brands were sold. In just 2 years, it surpassed Apple and became the top of the phone market. Lenovo surpassed all its global competitors in 2013 and became the number 1 personal computer company in the world. At this point, it entered the list of the 500 largest companies on a global basis and rose to 329th place. Within 2 years, 40 million more Thinkpads were sold and the 100 millionth Thinkpad was delivered in 2015. This year, Lenovo has become the world's number 1 computer manufacturer, as well as the third largest smartphone and tablet computer manufacturer. Lenovo, which acquired some other divisions of IBM for more than $2 billion, also bought Motorola for $3 billion.
Every supreme belief and success has an inspiration from its roots. And it seems that innovation is the basis of that inspiration for Lenovo. In this world that is transforming faster than any of us, the word hanging on the wall of Lenovo's Hong Kong branch should now take its place on my desk and yours. Innovation Never Stands Still. Innovation Never Stops.
