Prowfish are an incredibly unique fish that we only find in the North Pacific! They are abundant here in Alaska, more abundant than fishery incidents would suggest, due to their unique lifestyle. They feed primarily on jellyfish, particularly Lion's Mane Jellyfish, but at the same time they live in deep holes in the crevices of rocks and boulders. This is a strategy that is both simple and effective! Whenever a predator such as a sea lion or halibut comes by, they quickly pull back into their hole. Should one of them grab the Prowfish, they have thick, leathery skin, unique scale shapes, abundant slime, and powerful bodies that are uniquely suited for pulling down hard deep into their lair and sliding away.
Because of these habits, this makes them extremely hard to catch either on hook and line or by net, as their very nature keeps them out of harms way, so there is actually very little known about them, and they are only very rarely caught by accident by fishermen and crabbers.
However, if you know where to look, they CAN be effectively hunted by spearfishing, and are delicious to eat! I'm not too worried about overfishing them as we are essentially the only ones catching them and we're only getting the shallow ones, while the vast majority of them live deeper than we'll ever reach on dive gear.
