In 2010, Hennessey Performance unveiled the Hennessey Venom GT, a high performance sports car based on a modified Lotus Elise/Exige chassis and components.

The car has a 7.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 1244 hp to the rear wheels and weighs 1,244 kg.

On February 14th, 2014, Hennessey claimed that the Venom GT set a new world record with a top speed of 270.49 mph in 2.3 miles at the Kennedy Space Center's shuttle landing strip in Florida.

Unfortunately, according to John Hennessey (Founder), NASA only allowed the car to run in a single direction and not the required two, and Guinness World Records would not certify the attempt.

Although the record has been within reach, Hennessey Performance has yet to claim the top speed for a production vehicle.

With the unveiling of their new Venom F5, it seems that another attempt is coming soon.
