«Wayne Thiebaud» in der Fondation Beyeler

Die Fondation Beyeler widmet dem amerikanischen Maler Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021) die erste Einzelausstellung im deutschsprachigen Raum. Thiebaud, der seine Karriere ursprünglich als Grafikdesigner begann und kurze Zeit für die Walt Disney Studios in der Trickfilmabteilung arbeitete, beschwört in seinen Gemälden von Sahnetorten, Kuchenstücken, Cupcakes und Bonbons die Verheissungen und den Überfluss des «American Way of Life». Neben den Stillleben werden Figurenbilder sowie multiperspektivische Städtebilder und Landschaften ausgestellt, welche die Vielseitigkeit des brillanten Malers demonstrieren. Seine raffinierten Farbsetzungen scheinen die Motive zum Leben zu erwecken und schaffen eine ganz eigene Stimmung, die sich zwischen Nostalgie, Melancholie, Ironie und Witz bewegt.

Die Retrospektive präsentiert mit 65 Werken aus vor allem amerikanischen Museen und privaten Sammlungen die wichtigsten Schaffensperioden des Künstlers und lädt dazu ein, seine Bildwelt und seine virtuose Malweise zu entdecken.

«Wayne Thiebaud» at Fondation Beyeler

The Fondation Beyeler is devoting the first individual exhibition in the German-speaking world to American painter Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021). Thiebaud, who initially started out as a graphic designer and briefly worked for Walt Disney Studios’ animation department, depicted the promise and profusion of the “American way of life” in his paintings of cream cakes, pie slices, candies and cupcakes. Next to such still lifes, the exhibition features figure paintings as well as multi-perspective cityscapes and landscapes, showcasing the painter’s versatility and dazzling technique. His highly sophisticated use of colour seems to breathe life into his motifs and creates a distinctive atmosphere that balances nostalgia, melancholy, irony and humour.

Featuring 65 works on loan from mainly American museums and private collections, this retrospective presents the key periods of the artist’s work and invites viewers to explore his visual world and virtuoso painting technique.

«Wayne Thiebaud» à la Fondation Beyeler

La Fondation Beyeler consacre au peintre américain Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021) la première exposition individuelle dans l’espace germanophone. Thiebaud, qui avait initialement débuté en tant que graphiste et travaillé brièvement au sein du département d’animation des Walt Disney Studios, évoque dans ses tableaux de tartes à la crème, de parts de gâteau, de cupcakes et de bonbons les promesses et la profusion du «American way of life». Outre ces natures mortes, l’exposition présente des images de figures ainsi que des paysages urbains et naturels aux perspectives multiples, qui donnent à voir les nombreuses facettes et la brillance technique du peintre. Son utilisation raffinée des couleurs semble donner vie aux motifs représentés et crée une atmosphère toute particulière oscillant entre nostalgie, mélancolie, ironie et humour.

Avec 65 oeuvres en provenance de musées et de collections privées principalement américains, cette rétrospective présente les principales périodes du travail de l’artiste et permet d’explorer son univers visuel et sa technique virtuose.
