In the 1940's, Irene Williams was interviewed for the Slave Narratives Project and had claimed that she was an American negro slave, prior to emancipation. This claim was later proven to be false. In 2015, it was discovered that Rachel Anne Dolezal, a professor at Eastern Washington University and the President of the NAACP in Spokane, Washington, was a white woman claiming to be a black woman.

Maybe I can understand why Dolezal would claim to be a part of the black experience, but why Williams? What wold the advantage of her claiming have been a slave?
