Lincoln (Denzel Washington), who is paralyzed due to his official duties, was once a renowned detective who solved countless cases, but since he's been paralyzed he's closed himself off. This time, he is invited by the NYPD to help out because of a mysterious murder case; at first Lincoln refuses the invitation, but after seeing the case he becomes emotionally involved in the case.
　　New York has recently been the scene of mysterious broken bodies, and the killer has deliberately left evidence to challenge the police. Patrolman Emilia (Angelina Jolie) discovers a dismembered body on her last patrol, but when she makes a series of bold assumptions, her fellow officers are reluctant to pay any attention to her, believing her to be nothing more than an unknown patrolman.
　　But Emilia's sensitivity and bravery are recognized by Lincoln, who asks to work with the rookie on a breakthrough case. The two work surprisingly well together and finally learn that killers have a tendency to be violent and are well organized before they kill.
