How to make DIY door panels for your classic Volkswagen. I'm installing them on my 1967 Squareback that is a custom creation and using a lot of parts from a Miata. Of course this would also work for other classic cars like the Beetle, Mustang, MG Midget, Triumph Spitfire, etc.

I didn't do a great job of explaining it in the video, but go here to see photos and detailed steps: http://dannix.net/lib/frankenwagon/do...

1. first, make a template for the shape of the door panel by taping clear plastic sheeting to the inside of the door, now you can look through the plastic for where it needs to be cut, then cut it out. You can use this sheet to seal the up the inside of the door frame, this is important so don't skip it.
2. trace the shape onto 1/8" hardboard and cut it out with a jigsaw. Make sure to get all the holes you need for the door handle, window crank, etc.
3. coat the hardboard with wood sealant, I used shellac, this will keep them from warping from moisture. Make sure to get the edges and holes.
4. Now its time to start wrapping the hardboard with your vinyl. Use 3M adhesive spray and follow the instructions, don't use Scotch, and I like the spray kind not the brush on kind. You can use cloths pins to help around the edges, but a good adhesive will hold well. If its not holding well then pull it off and get a better product.
5. If you're like me, then you'll find that its easier and better to just use self-drilling screws to attach the door panels to the metal door frame. Use trim washers and stainless steel hardware so that it looks good.

Good luck!
