If you’re struggling to separate God’s voice from your own thoughts and feelings, you’re not alone.

Discerning between God's voice and our own thoughts or desires can be challenging at times, but it’s a crucial aspect of spiritual life - because we know that God will never lead us astray.

In this video, I’m going to help you learn how to tell when it’s God’s voice you’re hearing versus your own in four practical ways:

Seek Alignment with Scripture

The Bible is a foundational truth for Christians and serves as a reliable standard against which any guidance or message from God can be tested.

Since God is consistent in character, He will not communicate something that contradicts His written Word.

When trying to discern if a message or feeling is from God, compare it to biblical teachings.

For instance, if you feel led to make a decision, check whether this decision aligns with biblical principles and teachings.

Prayer and Meditation

Prayer is not just about presenting requests to God, but also about aligning our hearts and minds with His will.

Asking God for wisdom and discernment in understanding His guidance is a key step in discernment.

Meditation on Scripture involves deep thinking and reflection on the Word of God.

This practice allows you to internalize and understand the Scripture more deeply, helping to distinguish between your thoughts and God’s voice.

Psalm 1:2 emphasizes this, reading, "But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night."

Seeking Godly Counsel

Consulting with mature Christians or spiritual mentors is an integral part of our spiritual growth, and their insights can also provide clarity and help in discerning God's voice (Proverbs 11:14).

If you don’t have someone you can turn to right now - start by looking for individuals who are known for their spiritual maturity, biblical knowledge, and godly character.

These could be pastors, mentors, or spiritually mature friends. I’m sure anyone you approach will be more than happy to help you.

Share your thoughts and feelings with them and be open to their insights.

They may offer a perspective that aligns with Scripture and can confirm or challenge what you perceive as God’s voice.

Awareness of Inner Peace

Philippians 4:7 talks about the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

This peace is a hallmark of God’s presence and guidance, even when the path ahead seems challenging.

It’s important to differentiate between divine peace and mere human comfort.

God’s peace can sometimes accompany decisions that are difficult or require sacrifice, while our natural inclination might be toward the easier or more comfortable choice.

When faced with a decision or a perceived message from God, take a moment to assess your inner peace.

Ask yourself whether this peace aligns with biblical truth and the wisdom of godly counsel. If there's unease or confusion, it might be a sign to pause and seek further clarity.

You’ll Learn to Recognize God’s Voice through Experience

I want to end by saying that like any relationship, recognizing God's voice comes with time and experience.

However, through regular reading of the Bible, prayer, and being attentive to the Holy Spirit’s prompts, you will enhance your ability to discern between God’s voice and your own.
