What is a neutral conductor? What does it do? What happens if there is a fault and it breaks/opens?

This video will cover all those questions on a 120/208V 3-Phase circuit, however the concept is exactly the same in a 1-Phase circuit.

A neutral conductor will maintain phase voltages to ground and carry any unbalanced load.
