2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63 First Drive Review: A Sophisticated Thrill Machine

The new Mercedes-AMG GT63 coupe takes the German brand's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 formula and turns it up a notch for 2024. With 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, this two-door rocket can hit 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 196 mph. But it's not just a straight-line star – the latest GT is a genuine corner carver, too.

Helping the GT63 change directions is Mercedes' innovative anti-roll system. Rather than using traditional anti-roll bars, the GT employs a hydraulic setup connecting all four dampers. Fluid is pumped between the shocks to virtually eliminate body roll and improve tire camber in corners. Combined with the massive 305/30 rear and 295/30 front Michelin Pilot Sport tires, this car has unbelievable grip.

Rear-wheel steering keeps turn-in crisp, and Mercedes' intelligent all-wheel-drive can send all the power to the rear wheels when needed. The nine-speed transmission is a willing accomplice in keeping the V8 on the boil. All of this tech allows even novice drivers to attack twisty roads with confidence.

But the Mercedes isn't a sports car – it's intended to be a capable grand tourer, too. The GT's massive 24 cubic feet of cargo space swallows luggage with ease, and there's even an optional tiny rear seat (for kids or your worst enemies). An updated Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system boasts awesome features like augmented reality navigation.

Unfortunately, the GT63 prioritizes handling over ride quality a bit too much for our liking. Even in the softest Comfort mode, this coupe crashes over bumps, with lots of noise from the tires and wind penetrating the cabin at speed. We'd prefer a bit more isolation on long highway slogs.

Minor gripes aside, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63 is a seriously impressive machine. With endless power, tenacious grip, and cutting-edge chassis tech, this is one grand touring coupe that doesn't sacrifice thrills for its versatility. If you want a wildly capable two-door that can realistically double as a daily driver, the new GT should be on your shortlist when it hits dealerships in the first half of 2024.
