In July 1996, the Sultan of Brunei threw the world's most expensive and lavish birthday party to celebrate his 50th. A banquet for thousands of VIP guests at the world's largest palace, a polo match with Britain's Prince Charles (with professional Argentinian polo players flown in especially, to make up the sides) and Michael Jackson hired by the Sultan's fun-loving brother Prince Jefri to play a public concert - with admission totally free to anyone who want to show up. A vast stadium was custom-built in record time for the Jackson performance, fitted out with bejewelled technical equipment, located at Brunei's answer to 'Disneyland' - the multi-million dollar, solid gold-studded Jerudong Park theme park. When word of the Jackson performance got out, and spread like wildfire, fans flocked to Brunei from across Asia. Michael Jackson and his entourage were reputedly paid $17 million for the performance.
