In this video we show you exactly how easy it is to offset the platter alignment in a hard drive and the effect it can have on the drive's ability to function. Data recovery is almost always impossible after the platters of a hard drive have lost their original alignment. So if you plan on attempting your own hard drive repair, or data recovery, make sure you don't have priceless data that you can't afford to lose.

Contrary to popular belief, hard drive platters cannot be read independently outside of the drive case. They are not like CD's. Each platter surface holds a portion of all the files stored on the drive. The alignment between platters, both horizontally and vertically is crucial and there is almost no tolerance. Once the alignment is skewed, the data is almost always gone for good. The cost to attempt a recovery after that would be extraordinarily expensive, and there would be no guarantee your data could even be recovered.
