Northern Virginia contains three of the five wealthiest counties in the United States. At the same time, there are pockets of poverty – one VCU professor refers to them as “islands of disadvantage.” It’s especially troubling that the life expectancy of someone living there is 17 years lower than it is for those living in a nearby wealthier neighborhood.
