The tracks we race on, the performance cars we drive, and their origins are something of legends that should never be forgotten. This month’s Speed Society Car Club exclusive “American Heritage” is our way of remembering the greats like the Ford GT40.

It’s hard to say when the need for speed truly began in the US, but the first legislature-backed motor race with a substantial purse in the US was run on July 16, 1878, over a 200-mile course through several cities in the midwest.

City-to-city races were quite common as closed-course tracks had not yet been introduced. In fact, once “oval tracks” became popular they stemmed from bicycle racing, and later from motorcycle racing on highly-banked, circular or oval velodromes. Velodromes made of wooden boards laid longitudinally were used in the early days of the 20th century because they were smooth and fast. One of the first races to take place on these new tracks was the race of Miller cars in 1928.

American automotive racing runs deep in our veins, one can’t help but appreciate the tenacity and innovative drive that went into the constant development of the automobile for racing. When we think of the most iconic American racing heritage car, we had to pay homage to the Ford GT40 which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race from 1960 to 1965 against a rivalry with Ferrari and continued to win the 1966 through 1969 races as well. The GT40 represents the will to fight, American muscle, perseverance to win, and the freedoms and independence we enjoy as Americans.

This iconic design is what the GT40 truly represented during its time racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. You will also find the Speed Society Car Club hit along with the Limited Edition 39.
