With VRAM becoming a point of contention around graphics cards these days, AMD came up with a solution for those who felt like 8GB wouldn’t be enough in the future. In fact, they came up with this solution about 6 years ago; High Bandwidth Cache Controller, or HBCC, was a feature of the RX Vega graphics cards when they launched in 2017. This enabled the use of system RAM instead of VRAM, meaning that if you had enough spare RAM in your PC, you could dedicate as much as you liked to your GPU.
HBCC was mostly ignored at the time, as 8GB cards like the Vega 64 weren’t exactly being overly stressed by games of the day, but things have changed in 2023. Does HBCC work as advertised? Does it help the ageing GTX 1080 competitor run today’s memory-hungry games? And why wasn’t it more popular?
