So I get this question all the time.


Does it matter if my vehicle's clean when I take it into the dealership to get a trade in number?


Now I don't have any data to prove this but as someone who has had to appraise hundreds of trade-ins I have a few thoughts on this topic.


let's think about this, if you were trying to sell your house would you leave dishes in the sink for the pictures?


would you cut the lawn?


Would you leave that hole in the drywall from the the kids game of ball hockey


of course you wouldn't, who would?


I mean your real estate agent wouldn't even represent you.

The same goes with your car.


When I'm looking at a trade in,

if the insides filthy,
there's empty coffee cups everywhere
oil change sticker is overdue (that’s a big one)


I can't help but think this is somebody that doesn't maintain their vehicle


Now if your car is 20 years old it probably isn't going to make a difference on the trade value based on how clean it is


But if you're looking to get an extra $500 or $1,000 on a five, six year, even seven year old vehicle


Showing up with a vacuumed, nice smelling, recently washed trade in is the way to easily save a few hundred maybe even a few thousand dollars.


Have recent repair bills? Bring them in. That’s a huge win for you and the dealer.


This is how you are going to gain leverage if you feel the trade in value is low.
