Inside of the trenches of the First World War battlefields, there was a significant amount of medical issues that plagues the soldiers. One of the most terrible was Shell Shock, which caused soldiers a huge number of issues and psychological problems. The term Shell Shock was documented at the time of the war and it was believed 'neurosis' was linked to the explosion of the shells that fell all around the trenches.

But also the condition of Shell Shock was poorly understood and the British Army were not very sympathetic to those who suffered. Also the British executed a number of soldiers during the war for desertion and these were men who suffered.
