No LCR meter? How to measure an inductor or capacitor? If you have a oscilloscope and a function generator, it is quite simple to measure the inductance of a coil or transformer. I will show you my set up and the simple math required to measure an Inductor as well as the link in the comments to a free download of the Excel spreadsheet. This technique also allows for a better understanding of how the coil will react at the circuit frequency, not just the test frequency. The same technique can be done for capacitors. This is critical information when working on analog electronics which will require more precise values of components to calculate frequencies. This video addresses a measurement issue I had in my first video as well as looks at the accuracy of this technique by comparing the measured value to a SPICE simulation in Proteus, compared to the nominal value. I also compare a budget component tester capable of measuring inductance. One nice thing about this technique is that you can test the inductance at your working frequency, ideal for designing switching regulators.
