Occasioned by the birth of a baby from three parents, thanks to a new in vitro fertilization technique, Dr. Thanos Paraschos, a specialist in IVF, talks about the scientific achievement that gives hope to many women facing such challenges. The mother’s and donor’s eggs were combined to treat the mother's mitochondrial disease in order to create a new healthy egg consisting of the mother's egg nucleus based on her genetic material and the donor’s mitochondrial material. The new egg was fertilized by the baby's father and the result was a healthy fetus from three people's genetic representation. Dr. Paraschos refers, among other things, to other wonders of science such as pre-implantation diagnosis, which allows parents to protect the embryo from any chromosomal abnormalities and hereditary diseases.
