What Does It Really Mean When Ollivander Says "The Wand Chooses The Wizard" In Harry Potter

We all know that the wand chooses the wizard, but the reasons why are complex. Wandlore has been studied in the Harry Potter Universe by Ollivander and others for more than 2000 years, yet there are still so many secrets. We know about cores like Unicorn hair, Dragon heartstring and Phoenix feather, which choose a suitable witch or wizard based on how compatible they are with the core’s abilities. The wood chosen for wands, like Holly, Vine, Willow and Yew, are more likely to pick a master with specific personality traits and goals. But are these choices based on fate or destiny? On the wizard or witch’s identity? Or maybe the wand takes a gamble when it sees a certain type of potential, knowing it can change allegiances later if it finds a more suitable match?

See, it’s all very complicated, but we’re going to give you a quick rundown of what some of the Wandlore means, including some of the rare cores like Veela hair, Thestral hair (found in the Elder Wand) and Basilisk horn. From Hermione Granger to Bellatrix Lestrange and Draco Malfoy to Lord Voldemort, we’ll also talk about twin cores and Priori Incantatem. We’ll even look at flexibility and length, to get a sense of how they determine a wand’s true master-- and why a wrong choice can be disastrous (we’re looking at you, Ron Weasley.) Here’s a breakdown of J.K. Rowling’s epic wands, and what we still hope to discover about their complicated “minds.”
