In 2023, China recorded its first population decline in decades. How is Beijing assessing the scale and scope of China’s demographic challenges, and what avenues might it pursue to combat these trends? What are the implications for China’s economic growth and international status going forward?

Please join the Interpret: China project for a panel discussion unpacking these important questions, drawing on recently translated primary source materials. The panel will feature Yen-hsin Alice Cheng, Research Fellow at Academia Sinica, Stuart Gietel-Basten, Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Khalifa University, Carl Minzner, Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law, and Yun Zhou, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. The panel discussion will be moderated by Jude Blanchette, Freeman Chair in China Studies.

This event is made possible by support from the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
