The Desert of Maine was originally a farm that was owned by the Tuttle family in 1737. The Tuttle's attempted to grow potatoes on their farm but the land became over grazed by sheep which led to soil erosion and caused the sand (which is actually silt left from glaciers) to be exposed. The farm was eventually left abandoned until 1925 when a man named Henry Goldrup turned it into a tourist attraction. The Tuttle's barn still remains on the property till this day and its the only evidence that this land use to be a farm.
