A credible identifying witness may be used to verify a signer’s identity when proper ID is not available. Learn how to use credible witnesses here: https://bit.ly/4a08deZ

As a Notary, you may appear at an appointment where a signer lacks the proper form of identification and has instead brought someone to vouch for their identity. This person is referred to as a credible identifying witness.

Some states allow Notaries to use a credible identifying witness if an acceptable form of ID isn’t available. In this case, the credible witness may need to present their own approved form of ID.

State laws vary when it comes to the use of credible witnesses. For example, there are states that may not allow family members to be a witness and other states may require two witnesses in place of the signer’s ID. It’s best to check your state’s specific laws and requirements before using a credible identifying witness.
