CSFI Economic Outlook: Presidential election chaos & a global economy shooting itself in the foot.

Why you should watch: Will Tuesday's US Presidential and Congressional elections be decisive? Or will they linger on in the courts, as both sides seek to invalidate what they see as an illegitimate power grab by their opponents? That's a toss-up. But if (as expected) Biden and Harris do emerge as victors, big changes could be in store - particularly if betting markets are right about a Democratic 'sweep' of Congress. Meanwhile, however, governments across Europe are plunging their economies into an economic deepfreeze that could be even more damaging than the last shutdown. But what about the 'science', you might say? Surely, 'scientists' want even tougher measures? Well, not exactly. In this particular case, the collateral damage may be even worse than any bad outcomes that are avoided (or, better, delayed) by draconian measures now. Watch, and weep.

In his Weekly Economic Outlook, Andrew Hilton, the CSFI’s Director, discusses the current crisis, its impact on the global economy, and what we may be missing.

Andrew is a former World Bank economist, who also ran a small economic consultancy advising international clients, particularly in the Middle East. He has an MA from New College, Oxford, an MBA from Wharton, and an MA and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Thouron Scholar and Kent Fellow.
