If you are buying a used car privately, a car history report is recommended to check possible insurance category damage, theft, mileage fraud or current finance agreements. These factors can impact vehicle safety and value. You will need a car registration number to access a free report at https://www.carveto.co.uk/car-history...

Perhaps you need more information due to a recent accident? In this case, your insurer will inspect your car and determine if it is economical to repair and get back on the road.

Flood and fire damage can also render a car with category write off.

Or you may have learned that your car has recorded damage, and you believe the status is inaccurate. The Motor Insurance and Anti Fraud Theft Register (MIAFTR) are responsible for tagging written off cars. If you want more information or support, contact our team by email: [email protected]

Notes about write-off category status
It reduces car value as fewer motorists are willing to buy or drive a car that’s previously written-off.

Cat A and Cat B cars must be scraped and are not permitted to be on the road.

Cat S and Cat N cars are allowed on the road after professional repairs with an update to date MOT certificate.

Write off markers are permanent and displayed in a vehicle identity check (even after professional repair), and you need to declare your car as a write off if you choose to sell.

Insuring a write off tends to be expensive, and not all companies are willing to provide cover.

DVLA must be notified when vehicle status changes: https://www.gov.uk/written-off-vehicle
