Given two knotted circles in ℝ³, we can attempt to tell them apart by defining interesting invariants — numbers, polynomials, groups, etc — and seeing whether they take different values on the two knots. I’ll introduce some examples of each of these and explain how techniques from topology can show that one such invariant, Khovanov homology, always manages to tell certain simple knots apart from all others.
