Race Symphony ( original German title: Rennsymphonie ) is an experimental documentary by the German artist    • Hans Richter   .
Richter's opening caption (00:03) states that this is a documentary produced as an introduction to Ariadne in Hoppegarten , a feature film by Robert Dinesen edited by Richter.
The film describes the course of a day spent at Hoppegarten racecourse, from the preparation of the grounds and the premises (00:08) that will welcome punters, to the visitors (00:44) who arrive at Hoppergaten (01: 13) and their predictions of the likely winners; from the traffic around the racecourse (01:21), to the crowds entering the stands (01:59); from the opening of bets, to the running of the race (03:43) and the public's reactions once it's over (04:54).
Richter's camera captures details, gestures and expressions, which he deconstructs and recomposes in a rhythmic montage. Fades, multiple exposures, counterpoints... Richter multiplies the filmic possibilities for this fresco of a phenomenon in contemporary German society.
