John Thompson was the head basketball coach at Georgetown University from 1972 to 1999, where he won the NCAA championship in 1984. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. He graduated from Providence College and held a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of the District of Columbia.

Jesse Washington is the co-author of I CAME AS A SHADOW and a senior writer for ESPN’s The Undefeated, which explores the intersections of race, sports, and culture. Before coming to ESPN, Jesse covered race for The Associated Press, co-founded the basketball magazine BOUNCE, and published coffee-table books about the Black artists Romare Bearden and Elizabeth Catlett.

John J. DeGioia is the 48th President of Georgetown University. For nearly four decades, Dr. DeGioia has worked to define and strengthen Georgetown as a premier institution for education and research. He first met Coach Thompson as an eighteen-year-old freshman at Georgetown, when DeGioia founded the campus chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. DeGioia earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1979 and a PhD in philosophy from Georgetown in 1995. He supervised the athletic department as dean of student affairs and senior vice president before becoming president of Georgetown in 2001.
