In 2014, Sony Pictures Animation almost made a Super Mario Brothers movie. The movie was the brainchild of Sony Pictures, specifically Avi Arad, trying to court Nintendo to partner on the film for over five years.

Through the negotiations, Sony also tried to get Nintendo to give them the movie rights to Super Smash Brothers and Pokemon. Although those potential adaptations fell away, Avi Arad was actually able to secure the Mario movie rights for Sony Pictures Animation.

But after hearing about the movie only one time by way of an email leak, nobody heard anything about the movie ever again.
